It’s a bit subjective, but in our view, the Tacoma’s interior ranks a little lower than the Colorado’s. The Toyota has a feeling of durability instead of quality. And there’s no smartphone connectivity option either.

Driving and Performance: Chevy Colorado

The 2018 Chevrolet Colorado has three engine options and you can find better horsepower and torque among them than you can on the Tacoma. If you want the base engine, you get 200 horsepower compared to 159 on the Tacoma. If you want a towing powerhouse with plenty of torque, get the Duramax 2.8-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder with 369 pound-feet of torque, which is better than the 265 lb.-ft. of the Tacoma’s better engine.

These two compact pickups are about equally paired in and excellent at handling and maneuverability. There’s even some off-roading potential in either. But the Colorado has more umph overall, so the Chevy takes the cake here.

You’re not alone if you want the space that a midsize SUV offers without feeling like you’re driving a boat down the freeway. The Chevrolet Traverse is fully redesigned for 2018. So let’s compare the Traverse to one its foremost rivals: the Ford Explorer. Spaciousness: Chevy Traverse

The 2018 Chevrolet Traverse has slightly larger exterior dimensions this year but the Traverse has made a huge difference on the inside. The Ford Explorer has seating for seven or six with second-row captain chairs, so there’s already less seating available. There’s not enough leg support in the front seats and those in the third row might feel cramped unless the second row pulls they’re seats forward. But, overall, passengers will be fine as the Explorer is about as roomy in terms of head- and legroom as the Traverse. But there’s a difference in cargo capacity too. There’s 21 cubic feet behind the third row and 81.7 overall. So in terms of overall cabin space, the Traverse wins out but just by a bit.

Driving: Chevy Traverse

While it’s true that the 2018 Ford Explorer can tow and has more spirited acceleration than the Chevrolet Traverse, you’ll pay for it in maneuverability and handling. The Traverse is easy like Sunday morning, with excellent steering and braking. With a 310-horsepower engine, the Traverse is a perfectly capable machine, but the biggest selling-point is the way the Traverse handles. The Chevy is smooth and drives more like a four-door sedan than a mid-size SUV.

Meanwhile, you will feel every one of the Ford Explorer’s 4,500 pounds. Many complain that the Explorer feels even bigger than this Ford really is, with tricky maneuverability and suffering from poor visibility. The Explorer is a mighty powerhouse with three available engine options, but if you worry about driving something as big as a midsize SUV, the Explorer probably isn’t for you.

Savings: Chevy Traverse

Trim Levels: Chevy Silverado 1500

The 2018 Chevrolet Silverado comes in eight different trims. It starts out with the humble-bragging Work Truck (WT) that is strictly business but just as tough as any other trim. It tops out at the Silverado 1500 High Country that comes with all the bells and whistles, like 20-inch wheels, 6-inch tubular side steps, spray-on bedliner, premium BOSE sound system, 8-inch touchscreen with navigation, 12-way heated and ventilated leather front seats, heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, power-adjustable pedals, and Enhanced Driver Alert Package. If you’re using your truck for work only, the WT should be just fine. Most others will like the added value found in the LS, LT, or LTZ. The 2018 Ford F-150 is just a hair behind with seven trim levels. The most affordable trim is the XL, followed by the XLT. Keep in mind that these two trims are the only ones that offer all available cab configurations and all available bed lengths. The best of the best is the F-150 Limited. The average buyer will get the Lariat, the seeming sweet spot for most people. Off-roaders will want the Raptor.

Those beds come in 5’8″, 6’6″, and 8-foot lengths, although in most trims choosing the crew cab rules out the longest bed. The cabs come in Regular, Double, and Crew. The Double and Crew have back row seating, with the Crew offering the most legroom for backseat passengers.

Like the Silverado, the Ford F-150 also offers three bed lengths and three cabs. The options are abundant on the first two trim levels and then become a bit more restrictive. For example, the Lariat does not offer a Regular Cab option.

Price: Chevy Silverado 1500

This one might come as a surprise because the Ford F-150 starts at a lower price than the Chevy Silverado. But the steps up in trim level are steeper for the F-150. For example, the F-150 Limited is almost $9,000 more than the Silverado High Country. And the mid-trim Lariat is more expensive than all but the top two Silverado trims. The Silverado 1500 has a healthy range of punchy engine options. It comes with one of three engines: the 285-horsepower 4.3-liter V-6, the 355-horsepower 5.3-liter V-8, or the 420-horsepower 6.2-liter V-8. The best of these can go from 0 to 60 in just five and half seconds. That’s giddyup in spades.

The Dodge Ram 1500 starts with a standard 305-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 engine. It can be swapped out for a 240-horsepower 3-liter turbodiesel V-6 or a 395-horsepower 5.7-liter Hemi V-8. These are good options but in terms of raw horsepower and acceleration in action, the Chevy Silverado 1500 passes the finish line first.

Towing and Hauling: Chevy Silverado 1500

Any pickup truck worth its salt can tow and haul plenty. It’s the hallmark of the class, the reason the class was invented. The Silverado can carry up to 2,250 pounds and tow up to 12,500 pounds when properly configured. Those are hefty numbers.

On the other hand, the Ram 1500 claims 1,880 hauling capacity and 10,640 pounds in towing capacity. Respectable numbers, but simple math prove which pickup wins this category.

Reliability and Warranty: Chevy Silverado 1500

It doesn’t matter how good a truck is if it doesn’t last. People become attached to a brand when it proves time and time again it can take a beating and keep trucking. Then ten or twenty years down the road, they’ll repeat buy and spread the word.

There’s no reliability score from JD Power and Associates on the 2018 models yet, but the 2017 Silverado earned a 3.5 score while the 2017 Dodge Ram only earned an average 3. Chevrolet also provides a better warranty, in case the unthinkable does happen. It’s five years or 60,000 miles of roadside assistance plus two years or 24,000 miles of complimentary service. By comparison, Dodge offers just three years or 36,000 miles.
