1. Disconnect the ground cable from the battery

2. As a safety precaution, double check the fuel line for cracks or leaks

3. Remove the fuel pump relay; attempt start vehicle – the vehicle will stall (this relieves fuel pressure)

4. Raise the vehicle to a comfortable level

5. Loosen the clamp connecting the fuel filler neck to the tank with a screwdriver; pull the fuel filler neck loose and remove it

6. Disconnect the all of the fuel lines from the vehicle (this can be done by squeezing the clamps and pulling the line in newer Chevy vehicles)

7. Unplug the electrical plugs that are connected to the fuel pump (they are usually quick release plugs)

8. Remove the gas tank straps by unscrewing the bolts securing them; carefully lower and remove the gas tank (depending on how full the tank is, you may need an additional person or two to hold the gas tank and help lower it while you remove the second strap)

9. Remove all hoses that are connected to the fuel pump assembly (as with the end that was connected to the car, this can be done by squeezing the clamps and pulling the line in newer Chevy vehicles)

10. Thoroughly clean the area around the fuel pump assembly to prevent any contaminants from getting into your gas tank when you loosen the gas tank’s locking ring that keeps the fuel pump firmly connected to the tank; loosen and remove the locking ring (loosening usually requires a counterclockwise turn, assisted by clamps or a hammer and chisel)

11. Carefully lift the entire fuel pump module out of the gas tank (you may want to lift it partially and allow it to drain before completely removing it)

12. Remove the new fuel pump module from the box (you may be required to install the float arm and fuel pump seal)

13. Lubricate the fuel pump module’s seal; carefully lower the new fuel pump module into the tank (make sure to line the fuel pump assembly’s tab up with the marker on the fuel tank)

14. Replace the fuel tank’s locking ring (doing this usually requires a clockwise turn, assisted by clamps or a hammer and chisel)

15. Remove the old fuel line connector clips from the old fuel pump assembly; place them on the new fuel pump assembly

16. Securely connect the fuel lines to the fuel pump assembly

17. You may be required to replace the fuel pump harness – this is done by cutting the wires to the old harness and either soldering and heat shrinking the wires, or using butt connectors (the wires may be color coded, but if not, match them by size)

18. Replace the fuel tank and reinstall the gas tank straps (as with removing the gas tank, this may require two or more people)

19. Reattach the fuel filler neck to the tank; make sure that the clamp is firmly secured

20. Reconnect the electrical plugs to the fuel pump

21. Reconnect all of the fuel lines to the vehicle

22. Reconnect the fuel pump relay

23. Reconnect the battery

24. Prime the engine by turning the engine on and pumping the gas (while in park)
