Only factory authorized dealerships, with specially trained technicians, can issue a Manufacturer Certification. The process involves a multi-point examination of every system on the vehicle – 172 points on a Chevrolet automobile – following a very specific formula established by the manufacturer. Types of Certification

Two types of certification are most common. "Dealer Certification" means the vehicle is backed by a warranty from the dealership offering the sale. This process may involve a less rigorous inspection than a factory equivalent, and you may be expected to buy an extended warranty from a third party. Such warranties usually involve some deductible costs, and the coverage may only be applicable at the dealership where the purchase was made.

5. Most new vehicles depreciate conspicuously when they’re first purchased (up to 40 percent in some cases); buying a two-year-old car that’s been Certified should mean you get an effectively as-new auto, for a very substantial reduction over the cost of a new model
6. Even relatively high-mileage examples must pass the rigorous inspection, so evidence of use through wear-and-tear should be minimal
7. The certification checklist should be made available to you before purchase, so you can understand and put a value on all the work that’s been done
8. You will receive a stringently detailed document enumerating everything that’s covered by the warranty (this may be powertrain only, or it may be bumper-to-bumper coverage)
9. You will know before ever using the vehicle how many miles, or alternately how long a period of ownership, you have before the Certification period expires
10. You will have the dealership’s return policy in writing, and, if it doesn’t match your expectations, you will know this before striking a deal (or walking away)
